Papers, 1768-1811.

Papers, 1768-1811, including diaries, account books, and other business records. An account and record book of voyages with the brig Sally, 1768-1773, includes notes on wages paid to the crew, freight lists, accounts with shippers, freight charges, cargo, etc. During this period the ship stopped at New York, Québec, Cape Fear, Dublin, London, Terceira in the Azores, Lisbon, and Honduras. The book includes copies of letters written from Lisbon and London in 1771. Townsend's father Samuel seems also to have had an interest in the ship. There are also mentions of financial transactions with Robert, James, and Jacob Townsend. A daybook, 1776-1778, records receipts and expenditures while in England and Montreal, most of the accounts relating to the ship Glasgow. A record book, May, 1795 - December, 1806, kept at his anchor shop in Ferry Street, New York City, records the making and repairing of anchors at the shop, names of the men employed, work assigned, wages, charges for repairs, names of customers, number of anchors made, deliveries from Augusta Iron Works, his forge in Tuxedo (N.Y.), reasons for stoppages, etc. It also records that Townsend and his family stayed out of New York City in Septmeber and October of 1805, because of the yellow fever epidemic. Thirty small pocket diaries and memorandum books, 1798-1811, many kept while away from home, deal with a variety of subjects. Some are merely memoranda of cash accounts. Others deal with such matters as his frequent trips to the forge and anchor works at Tuxedo (N.Y.), and operations at the works; land surveying and real estate transactions; farming and wine making at his farm in Clove (N.Y.); names of early residents in Kakiate patent; disputes over the Gore Line; travel conditions in winter between New York and Albany (where he attended the Legislature); visits to Oyster Bay and Riverhead, Long Island; shipping to Baltimore; visits to his children at school; his dispute with Commodore John Rodgers over the method of testing anchors; Dr. Samuel Latham Mitchill's visit to the Augusta works; family deaths, marriages and births, and his various residences in New York City. An account book, September 1807 - April 1810, records various expenses and receipts, including varied expenses and receipts, including shipments to and from Haverstraw and Cornwall, weekly records of iron made or refined, and anchor manufactory records. Another account book, 1803-1806, records accounts receivable and payable, with no reason for the transaction, including some with various members of the Townsend family; it probably but not certainly also belonged to Solomon Townsend.
